Meet It’s Nola - A Reintroduction of the Brand, Its Mission, and Founder

Jan 01, 2026Margaret Barrow

Hi there! Welcome. Or welcome back! If you have been part of the It’s Nola family for quite some time now, thank you so much for being here. We appreciate your continued love, loyalty, and support throughout the years. If you are new to the It’s Nola community, let us be the first to welcome you. We are so glad you are here! Some of you may already be familiar with It’s Nola and our mission, while others may not, but no matter where you find yourself, we wanted to take this time to reintroduce ourselves. Grab your favorite bag of It’s Nola and dive in to learn (or remember) more about us, our mission, and meet our founder, Dr. Margaret Barrow.

What is It’s Nola

It’s Nola was born out of a need to be healthy and a desire to make a difference in people’s lives and, most importantly, their health. At It’s Nola, we’re more than just food. We are a lifestyle. We know health and happiness lie in more than simply making mindful food choices. It’s about the complexities of living a life well lived and the choices we make to share and connect with others to bring value to our lives. Whether through food, fostering relationships, or mentoring others, all require a deep level of commitment. From new recipes to mindful personal connections, one must have intention and purpose in both areas of life.

When you encounter It’s Nola, perhaps on a grocery store shelf or maybe in a corporate pantry, we want you, our community, to know you’re eating food from people who care about you and your health. We truly want you to be healthy and happy. From your food choices to your personal connections, our team really cares about you, and that means caring about the whole person, both inside and out.

Our Mission

At It’s Nola, our mission is to inspire and promote healthy eating and living, to turn snacking into a nourishing ritual. At our company’s core, our values mirror who we are as people:

  • Accountable

  • Caring

  • Committed

  • Hardworking

  • Honest

  • Inspiring

  • Reliable

  • Respectful

We work hard to mindfully craft and create a culture of mindful snacking, ultimately empowering individuals to make healthier choices and embrace a lifestyle that celebrates and cherishes both taste and wellness, because why choose one when you can have both?

Our dedication is to making small-batch granola that is irresistibly tasty and truly wholesome. Using the highest-quality ingredients, each bite of our granola touts energy, joy, and well-being. At It's Nola, every snack is a step toward a happier, healthier you.

Besides granola, we have a passion for people. We support mentoring relationships that inspire community college students to follow their dreams. We are strong advocates and grateful benefactors of mentoring these relationships.

Our Founder

It’s Nola is a close-knit team on a healthy mission, and its founder and CEO is Margaret Barrow. A tenured college professor, Barrow is more than a businesswoman and professor; she is an author and keynote speaker, not to mention a daughter, sister, mother, auntie, friend, and non-judgmental vegetarian. “Like you, I am complex and full of complexities,” laughs Barrow.

So what exactly led Barrow to start It’s Nola, formerly known as Brooklyn Granola? “Truth be told, menopause weight gain inspired me to make my own snacks,” shares Barrow. “I focused on creating my own granola because I wasn't satisfied with the granola junk and crumbly mess I had been eating most of my life.”

Barrow knew she could make granola better compared to what was already on the market. So she went into her own kitchen and mixed some dried fruit, exotic spices, oats, nuts, seeds, and a plant-based binder. What she did not realize at the time was that she was creating an audaciously flavored and healthy granola snack bite. Chewy, compact, and downright delicious, Barrow started sharing these bite-sized snacks with family, friends, and students who quickly fell in love with them. “I am deeply grateful every day to my family and students who encouraged me to start this journey,” she says.
