You may have taken steps to create a more sustainable household. Maybe you have created a sustainable kitchen or started using more sustainable household products, but what about your skincare routine? Sustainable skincare may seem intimidating, but it can be simpler than you think. Here are some sustainable skincare ideas for both men and women that you can implement for the fall season and beyond.
Add a Recycling Bin to Your Bathroom
Most recycling bins are found in the kitchen, but if you want to create a more sustainable skincare routine, consider adding a recycling bin to your bathroom. Items that are common in the bathroom can usually be recycled. Think of things like body wash bottles, deodorant rolls, shampoo and conditioner bottles, toilet roll tubes, and of course, skincare bottles. Photo credit: Voyagerix
Choose Reusable Packaging
Many brands are switching over to eco-friendly reusable packaging. Reusable hand soap containers, refillable deodorant blocks, or shampoo and conditioner bars. There are plenty of options out there. Some products may even double or triple up on their purpose, which means less mindless packaging. Cut Tubes to Use Every Last Drop
Before you recycle any products, make sure everything is completely empty. Cut into tubes and scrape out containers of any excess product to make sure you do not miss anything. You may be surprised at how much product you can still use. Tip: A small spatula works great to scoop out any remaining creams, gels, and lotions. Photo credit: Ivan Kocha
Ditch Single-Use Items
There are so many bathroom and skincare products that are disposable and single-use. Think of things like cotton balls, cotton swabs, disposable razors, and makeup remover wipes. Items like washcloths can be used over and over again while reusable cotton pads and makeup wipes make for some more eco-friendly swaps. Some makeup and skincare cleansing wipes are even biodegradable. See what items you use that are one-time use only and swap them out for something more mindful and environmentally friendly. Finish Products Before Trying New Ones
Skincare products do expire, so be sure to check all expiration dates and use all of your products before trying new ones. If you do not like a certain skincare product, ask your family or friends if they want to try it out first so you can avoid tossing something that is perfectly good. Plus, you may introduce loved ones to a brand or product they fall in love with. Photo credit: JulyProkopiv
Give a Second Life to Containers
Some bathroom products, including skincare items, come in the cutest packaging. Instead of recycling everything, if there is a particular container or jar you enjoy, keep it. Simply find a new purpose for it. Jars can be great jewelry holders while serum droppers can be used for placing the desired amount of essential oils into diffusers. Pretty genius, right? Look for Eco-Friendly Brands and Ingredients
An easy way to become a more eco-conscious shopper is to purchase from brands that are Earth-friendly, non-toxic, and use sustainable ingredients. For example, Beauty Sponge Sachet and Vegan ingredients help protect the Earth’s ecosystems and waste less water overall. You can also use the Environmental Working Group (EWG) app and website to look up products that are better for you and the environment. Photo credit: netrun78
Use Less Water
Clean, fresh, running water can, and usually is taken for granted, especially when it comes to bathroom use and skincare routines. When brushing your teeth, cleansing your face, and showering, turn off the water faucet, and do not leave the water mindlessly running. Shutting the water off while you are working on your skincare routine and other daily hygiene routines can really add up and save more water than you probably think. Photo credit: Rattankun Thongbun
Incorporate these eight easy ways to create a more sustainable skincare routine. No matter if you are a man or woman, these simple sustainable skincare ideas are not only great for you, but also for the Earth and the environment.
